Welcome to the website of the Harlow, Essex KDS group. Karate-Do Shotokai (KDS) is a traditional karate style which focuses purely on the practice of karate as a martial art.
We run a friendly, social club where questions are encouraged and everyone is allowed to get the very best out of themselves – all in the spirit of developing quality karate practitioners. If you want to find out more then come along to one of our regular weekly practices. Our sessions are open to men and women of all ages and abilities.
Our instructors are all highly experienced and qualified and we run a small club to ensure every student gets direct, personal practice with us each and every lesson. Our senior instructor, 4th Dan Adrian Quick has taught Karate in Harlow since 1989.
The first lesson is free and no previous experience is required. All you need to practise is a t-shirt and tracksuit trousers! All are welcome!
The Harlow KDS Karate club hosted another regional training session on Tuesday 24th March which was attended by members of the KDS from throughout Essex, Norfolk and Hertfordshire.
With the advantage of having many senior Dan grades in the area, the courses are an opportunity for members to train with different people, share ideas and gain extra input into their own practice. Last night was no exception with a well attended session and grades ranging from 7th Kyu to 4th Dan filling the hall at St James with St Lukes Church in Harlow. Run by club instructors Martyn Gooding and Andy Lightfoot, the focus of the evening was developing the fluidity of techniques which ultimately brings speed and power to our karate. There was much digging into the legs to ground postures and loosening up the upper bodies which eventually led to a Sanbon sparring situation where distance and timing fed into mobile, relaxed attacks and blocks. Importantly, those with just weeks experience benefited equally to those with decades under their (black) belts. Another session will be hosted next month, with beginners welcome to join the club at any point beforehand.Details of how to contact the club for more details can be found here: http://www.harlowkarate.co.uk/get-in-touch-with-usWe were joined by members of the Norwich and Herts club for our regular inter-club session.
Here instructors Martyn Gooding and Andy Lightfoot run through the practice methods.

These are a couple of videos from the Southampton all grades course, held March 2010.
One shows the main aim for the weekend, which was subsequently broken down across the two days. The other features our very own Adrian Quick, where 5th Dan Tony Lima is showing a particularly dynamic example of physical condition in the upper body.
