Welcome to the website of the Harlow, Essex KDS group. Karate-Do Shotokai (KDS) is a traditional karate style which focuses purely on the practice of karate as a martial art.
We run a friendly, social club where questions are encouraged and everyone is allowed to get the very best out of themselves – all in the spirit of developing quality karate practitioners. If you want to find out more then come along to one of our regular weekly practices. Our sessions are open to men and women of all ages and abilities.
Our instructors are all highly experienced and qualified and we run a small club to ensure every student gets direct, personal practice with us each and every lesson. Our senior instructor, 4th Dan Adrian Quick has taught Karate in Harlow since 1989.
The first lesson is free and no previous experience is required. All you need to practise is a t-shirt and tracksuit trousers! All are welcome!
Club instructors Adrian Quick and Andy Lightfoot helped run the course with the local club. The 5th Dan group were also on hand, as was Harada Sensei.
Club instructors Adrian Quick annd Andy Lightfoot assist in the demos and guide the course practice.
We also celebrated 5th Dan Marie Kellett's birthday during the social.

How to get here
Sports Centre
The sports complex is on Iffley Road and is accessed by car via Jackdaw Lane. The map above shows it as ‘Oxford University Athletics Track’, in the large scale map below it is listed as number [5].
From the A40 (London end): The simplest route is to take the Headington Road exit at the roundabout and travel into Headington, down the Headington Hill and onto St Clement’s until you reach the large roundabout (The Plain). Take the second exit onto Iffley Road (A4158). Travel up the Iffley Road, the pub Fir Tree should be on your left and turn right onto Jackdaw Lane.
From the A34 (South): At the ring road junction, turn right onto the A423 and left onto the A4144 Abingdon Road. Turn right onto the B4495 Weirs Lane and Donnington Bridge Road until you reach the Iffley Road (A4158). Turn left onto the Iffley Road and left onto Jackdaw Lane (just past the church – Greyfriars).
From the A34 (North): To avoid coming through the city, come off the A34 at the A44 Woodstock Road past the Pear Tree Park & Ride and turn left onto the A40 – signs should tell you you’re heading for Headington. Follow the directions as if you were coming from London.
Social
The social will take place at the Chinese restaurant Lan Kwai Fong. The banquet includes alcoholic drinks (2 bottles of wine per table of 10) and, since we are lucky enough to have some very talented singers in the organization, a separate Karaoke room has also been booked. Please arrive at 6:30pm for the pre-dinner drink. Banquet will start at 7pm.
Rare historical KDS footage will be shown during the banquet. Separate menus for vegetarians are available and additional drinks can be consumed at a well-equipped in house bar.
Parking
There are a number of places to park in Oxford, but sadly there are not many places to park for free. The council heavily encourages you to use the park and ride system rather than use the city centre for parking. Details of on-street parking can be found by clicking here but most operate on a pay and display basis.
If you really need to park in Oxford City Centre then the parking spaces closest to the Karate venues are on St. Clements St. (120 spaces). Costs are Mon - Sun 08:00-20:00 0 - 1 hour £0.70 1 - 2 hours £1.30 2 - 3 hours £2.50 3 - 4 hours £5.00 4 - 6 hours £8.00 6 - 8 hours £12.00 8+ hours £15.00 All other times £0.70
NB: parking at the sports centre is free, but the car park is shut overnight and cars cannot be left at the sports centre car park overnight.
After practice lunch on Sunday
Practice on Sunday finishes at 1.30pm, followed by lunch at The Angel & Greyhound on St. Clements Street (just a few yards from the car park and about 10 minutes walking from the practice venue). Come and join us for some post-practice food & drinks!
